Are there different types of DC8s? The picture from Joe Pries (2nd last one) seems to have 346 sized engines compared to the others which are more 343 type hair dryers .
And what's the story behind these? Why are these all foreign registered? Were they operated in India with these registrations as wet leases or something? _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Leased by Air India in the 1980s from a variety of operators - all maintained their original registrations, all wore hybrid livery. Only the 2 Cargolux leases had relatively regular AI colors, with the centaur on the tail.

The DC8s originally had JT93D engines from P&W. In the 1980s, some were re-engined with CFM 56 engines. The one clicked by Joe Pries has the CFM 56 engines. _________________ Save Maharashtra! |

Air India had an extensive cargo network in the 1980s. Its fleet included the DC8s and a B747-200F. Going was great as long as the cargo market was almost closed to foreign operators but when the market was opened, AI's market share collapsed. _________________ Save Maharashtra! |

The last pic in the series - Icelandair McDonnell Douglas DC-8-63CF TF-FLC has a tail livery similar to the current AI livery minus the Ashok Chakra.
I wonder if this was considered in designing the current livery. _________________ Boeing makes planes. Airbus makes videogames! |

Air India (Cargo) did not operate the B747-200F. Though used as a pure freighter, it was a B747-200C (the first B747-200C ever built), leased from Evergreen International from 03/1986 to 11/1986.
She carried two registrations while at her time at AI - N747WR & then N471EV (her N registration was changed midway through her lease), giving the impression to some pundits that they were two distinct aircraft.
Air India (Cargo) also operated 3 leased IL-76s in the 1980s, though not in hybrid livery, but full SU colors. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

The JT3Ds were used in all the DC-8s starting from the series 50 onwards. Earlier DC-8s (Series 10-40) were powered with JT4A engines (a few even had RR conway engines). The ones which were re-engined to CFM56 were the DC-8-60 series. These were called the DC-8-70 Series.
Before the arrival of the 757-300, the DC-8-60s were the longest single aisle airliners in service. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).
