With the wooden flagpost of the century-old semaphore signal at Neral
station crackling downwards, the Neral Matheran mini train got a
green signal for its first passenger run since 26/7 on Monday.
Amid bursting crackers and blowing whistle, the mini train with six
coaches, powered by a diesel engine, started out from Neral at 11:11
am to reach Matheran around 1:45 pm
"A significant portion of the track had been washed away and the line
was shut for nearly 17 months since July 26, 2005. The railways have
spent Rs 3 crore to restore the line to its original glory. We have
begun with two services from Monday, but from Tuesday the train will
make four trips daily, two up and two down."
