Here is a short clip from a place where I used to work in Ireland.
The aircraft is a DC-9-50 that belonged to an airline called Dinar from Argentina.... it is a sad story as they had 5 or 6 planes and they all came through this facility for a D check.... the first one in had an engine problem that required an engine change.... so what did they do... cos they didn't have too much money this lot...
They ferried their second aircraft in for the check and had an engine removed from it to fit to the first one to fly it out.... and so on until the last aircraft came.... and there were no more engines to install....
As they didn't have too much money they actually left the aircraft there... and it lay there for many years... the company went broke and the overhaul company parted her out to raise money for what they were owed... so most of the useful parts were removed in the hangar and the aircraft was put on (flimsy) trestles to support it while the landing gear were removed... then the hydraulic cutters came in!!!!
As you can see this graceful lady wasn't going to die without a fight... much to the embarrassment of the wreckers and much to the enjoyment of my fellow engineers!!
Enjoy and marvel at the strength of how aircraft used to be built!
Cheers all...... Dave _________________ If it isn't broke - then dont try to fix it! |

Yep, heard from a number of sources that them Douglas birds were built like tanks, as were the Convair ones.
Not wanting to start an A vs B thing here, but I feel that amongst modern aircraft, the Boeings look like they are built stronger. In comparison, the Airbusses look like they've been taken out of a box and glued together with Araldite.
Just from an observer's/passsenger's point of view. Don't know much about how planes are built though _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

In the Early days the metals were tough & heavy.Technology enabled lighter materials & finally came the B787.
The future would be lighter still.
Talking about sad stories...The sad one at BOM is VT-ECP,what it was when it was AOG & what it is today is really sad.A wasted aircraft because of Red tapeism.
regds
