Air Asia's Tony Fernandes is a very busy man it seems. New Sri Lankan LCC HolidayAir has brought in AirAsia on board as an investor and plans to launch operations from March 2007. He has bought a 50 per cent stake. (This is from UNI again.)
HolidayAir will finally take off in March, says its chief executive officer Arjun Ruzaik and will open its office at the Colombo International Airport next month. First flight is on March 10.
Destinations are Cochin, Calicut, Trichy and Trivandrum, and within 24 months 16 to 20 routes in Asia and the Middle East --- Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore as well as the Maldives.
Fleet will be one A320 first and tehn another 7 later.
Local and foreign investors have invested US$20 million in the airline.
Three Sri Lankan companies, HolidayAir, India's Air Deccan and Expo Air, were granted approval to fly to four destinations in India by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), but the latter two have dropped out.
HolidayAir is expected to give tough competition to SriLankan Airlines.
Another new state-subsidised airline, Mihin Air, and operating A320s and A330s is to start in February/March. It wants to fly to the Gulf with dirt cheap tickets, says the report. |
