1st tribal IAF pilot from NE celebrates 50 years of service
Nov 2, 2016
Highly decorated airman, Wing Commander Joe Lalhmingliana, the first tribal from the northeast region to be commissioned as an Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot, celebrated the 50th anniversary of his commission as an air force pilot in Aizawl recently.
Lalhmingliana received his President's Commission from the then Air Chief Marshal Arjun Singh on October 29, 1966 when he was barely 21 years old. He, however, could not fulfil his long-cherished dream of becoming a fighter pilot to fly supersonic jets even though he was fully qualified to fly jet fighters. He received a letter from his father Thangkhama, who was then living in Kulikawn locality of southern Aizawl during April 1966 ordering him not to become a jet fighter pilot.
He then became a pilot for transport planes even as he was fully qualified to become a jet fighter pilot among the very few trainees. In an illustrious 20-year career span, working with the ministry of home affairs, he became one of the chosen few in the VIP squadron. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.
