Ok, so here it goes:
There were 4 students (including me) on the trip. We left the school at 7:00 AM and managed to get to LGA on time despite the rush hour traffic. We met the tour guide in the Central terminal. After a quick briefing we were on our way.
We first went to the engineering department (this was also an engineering trip as my school specializes in IT and engineering) The description of the heating and air conditioning systems was so complex that I don't remember everything they told yus now. They took us to the cooling tower which has a great view of the tarmac and where the water is cooled. This cooling tower is an innovation because it does not guve off any steam so that the aircraft can see better.
We then went to the planning department, where we learned that they would be building a new terminal to replace the central terminal, repaving runway 13-31, and we learned about the planning stages, also very complicated.
The highlight of my trip was next, the ATC tower. Today was a perfectly clear day, not a cloud in the sky, so VFR conditions. They were also using the optimal runway configuration, with take-offs on 13 and landings on 22, which means they can alternate between take-off and landings pretty easily. The tower is extremely busy. Not only do they have to monitor aircraft movements, they also have to monitor JFK and EWR procedures to determine their take off and landing procedures.
After a good 30 minutes in the tower we went to have lunch
After a quick lunch we went out on the tarmac. The runway and taxiways are very wide, not something you notice from an aircraft or the air. it was very busy and we had to keep on moving to avoid all the aircraft.
After the tarmac we bid our farewell. It was a great trip and I would love to do it again.
Unfortunately I did not have a camera, so I don't have any pictures to share. _________________ http://openflights.org/user/akumanduri |
