Good Morning friends
Welcome to my 3rd TR on this site.
I missed all of you due to the exams and college admission. I finally got some time to write.
So this TR is basically a two day visit to Chennai for my college admission counseling.
I got a counseling call from a reputed College in Chennai in the mid of May month. As soon as I knew, I sat on Makemytrip.com to book ourselves a return ticket from DEL.
After about 5mins of search Spicejet gave the best deal. I got a return ticket for INR 9800(Incl. of taxes) per person.
So we booked ourselves on
SG-305 DEL-MAA on 5/6/2013
SG-308 MAA-DEL on 6/6/2013
I was quite happy as, I was travelling by air after about 6 months. This time also I missed the B787 on this leg. As the timing and overpriced tickets didn’t suit us .
I made it sure that I will not forget the camera inside my check-in luggage this time like the last time for my trip to Chicago.
Days went by quite quickly, and finally the day arrived. I web checked-in a day prior to our departure and got a seat the best seats on the entire flight i.e. 16A and 16C. My dad called the cab a night before only. He arrived 30mins prior to the time given. Finally at 7.30am we left home.
Been so early, I thought the roads must be empty, but in Delhi there is no time when you wouldn’t see the rush. But as we approached the airport area, the road became quite empty. We arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal 1D about 10 past 8. It took us around good 40mins to reach here.
I was visiting this not very old terminal after about an year or so. This was my second flight out of this terminal. The 1D terminal opened about just 3-4 years. This terminal is now solely used by the Low Cost Carriers in India.
TERMINAL 1D
We checked the flight status on FIDS, the flight got late by 20mins. We went inside the terminal, the whole terminal were bustling with passengers. There was a long line for check-in infront of 2 Spicejet counters. I took 3 luggage tags and went for the security.
Yet again due to the morning rush, there was a huge line for security. I had stand more than 15mins get pass it. Luckily baggage X-ray was fast.
By the time we were airside it was nearly 8.40am. I was a bit hungry so was my dad. He found a seat for both of us and sat there, I went upstairs to KFC to grab two burgers. After eating I thought of spotting some aircrafts.
Lufthansa A346 to Munich
QATAR AIRWAYS B777-200 to Doha
SG-116 to VNS
At about 10am, boarding was announced. We boarded a bus from the lower level. For our 2.5hrs flight, Cinnamon (VT-SPW) was assigned the job. Soon the boarding commenced.
CINNAMON at our service
I boarded the aircraft and quickly placed the luggage in the overhead bin. The load was quite heavy today. The flight was almost full; I could hardly find an empty seat.
At about 10.25am the doors were closed. Soon the captain came on the PA system and announced some necessary details. He we said will make it to Chennai by 1pm, 5 minutes later we pushed back for a short taxi to main RNWY 10/27.
After waiting for 2 aircrafts to arrive, we aligned with the runway and were soon thundering down it. The rotation was quite late; we almost used more than 3/4th of the runway. Few right and left banks we were on our way to Chennai.
LEG SPACE in the EXIT ROW
6E-119 to BLR
30mins later the carts were rolled down the aisle for the paid meal service. I grabbed a cold chicken sandwich and a fruit juice. It was boring flight due to the lack of any on-board entertainment. Soon I snoozed of after the meal. Finally I got when we were about make our descent into the Chennai city.
The clouds were still heavy and there was continuous turbulence for about 15mins. We aligned with primary RNWY 7/25 and minutes later we landed. The landing was bit hard due to the crosswinds blowing.
Seconds from touch down
Chennai Airport
thanked the air hostess and got a glimpse of the flight deck too. Soon I disembarked through the aerobridge.
Thank you friends for reading the trip report with all your patience. Hope you all enjoyed it, would be waiting for your valuable comments and feedbacks.
THANK YOU!!

That's cool observation, Actually I don't knw the reason behind it.
BTW there was hardly any difference between the fares. But my father opted for Spicejet rather than Indigo. |

Anurag: it is nice to see you on the forum after quite a while. Thanks for some really nice T1-D pictures, and some nice descriptions. Was there a change in wind direction? Your initial pictures suggest East-to-West movements, but the QR plane is coming from the West: was it taxi'ing? You seem to have taken off East-to-West from runway 28. It has been quite a while since I have seen those parts of the airport: travelling with Air India means seeing only the new runway almost all the while. I seem to remember your Kingfisher airlines food descriptions, did you patronise the BoB here?
Cheers, Sumantra. |

Sumantra thanks....... No wind direction change... Your are right the QR was actually taxing but I couldn't see it taking off from the runway which is viewable in the pics.
I did took off from East side i.e. 10 side of the main runway
Air India avoids the main rnwy and always takes the new one..... T3 is rather close to the new rnwy that's why I guess. |

banerjee1000 wrote: | I did took off from East side i.e. 10 side of the main runway | Anurag, the East side is 28! The Dwarka side is the West, 10.
banerjee1000 wrote: | Air India avoids the main runway and always takes the new one | Usually, though some (but very few) flights seem to get the main runway, and not the new one, or the secondary one. The Chandigarh flight is an example, IIRC. On 23 Dec'13, I was elated to have a runway 28 landing (yes, from the East) on out AI 127 DEL-HYD flight - I was landing on this runway after ages.
Cheers, Sumantra. |

Why so many aircrafts are undergoing ramp loading? Shortage of aerbridges? _________________ Sabya99 |

What a bonus for us aircraft enthusiasts, to see the beauties, up and close? Aerobridges speed up movement, but DEL is somehow managing it all in T1.

You are right Sabya.T1 is having the shortage of aerobridges. Wish they do not come up.
Spotting in T1 is lot more easier than in T3. But the traffic in T3 is much more interesting. |

Sumantra you are correct aerobridges do speed up the movement. T1-A/B would be demolished according to the master plan.
T2 will be demolised as soon as the construction of T4 is over in the coming years.
But anyone knows about the latest status about the new ATC at DEL ? It was scheduled to open in November 2013. |

T2 will be demolised as soon as the construction of T4 is over in the coming years. | Anurag, I am sure you meant A/D above, since T1-B has long been razed to the ground. T1-C and D (arrivals and departures, respectively) - though T1-C is now-a-days seldom referred to by its actual name. There is a rumour that all this won't happen unless really needed. Some people here doubt that the secondary runway will be `straightened' to go parallel to 10-28 and 11-29, at least any time in the near future. There is a fourth parallel runway also in the master plan. T4, T5 and T6 may be a pipe dream right now, at least. Shifting the cargo complex after dismantling the current T1 and GA apron is a huge amount of work in itself, not to mention the `straightening', which will mean the 27 end coming in, like a compass. The IAF has some prime land up there was well, near the Technical area, and has plans for that as well, from what I hear.
Cheers, Sumantra. |

sabya99 wrote: | Why so many aircrafts are undergoing ramp loading? Cheers, Sumantra. |

Ya you are correct, the secondary rnwy maybe straightened down by some degrees to get it parallel to the main runway.
And pls tell me about the New ATC tower latest status. |
