This is Part 1 of my trip to Trip to Europe and India.
Part 1 will cover: Winnipeg- Toronto- Munich- Palma De Mallorca- Lagos (Portugal)- Seville- Barcelona
Part 2 covered here earlier: Barcelona- Paris- Delhi- Calcutta- Delhi- Paris- London- Montreal- Winnipeg
Complete Trip
All Maps: Courtsey: Great Circle Mapper
Background:
Winter months in Prairie Provinces are long and cold. Snow that falls in November in most of the years melts in end of April next year. Obviously, most of us try to avoid winter whatever way we can. For retired folks (also known as “snowbirds”) this is the time to embark on their annual journey (to go down south somewhere warmer like Arizona or Florida) and come back in spring. Working folks are not that lucky but we have endless options of escaping for a week or two to sun destinations (Cuba, Mexico, Jamaica etc). For about CAD1000 one can have a week in an all inclusive resort at Varadero or Cancun, airfare included. Been there and done that, I was thinking out of the box this time.
I wanted to avoid this
and this
and embrace this
and this
Planning:
Readers here will remember that in summer 2011, I went on a long trip covering Iceland, Denmark, Poland, Ukraine, Uzbekistan & finally to India. In July the weather in Iceland and northern Europe were warm that made the trip really enjoyable.
So which part of Europe will have nice weather in December? Cyprus and Malta – are the two places that came to mind but I wanted just not to sit by a beach I wanted more than that, some culture some history and also a beach front chair!
Portugal & Spain- No snow, no rain! Can you throw in an Island please? Yes there is Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza or Canary Islands- which one you like to pick? Google answered all my questions and helped me to zero in on my flight path!
Good old Aeroplan asks for 60,000 points for flight between anywhere in Canada to Western Europe (though you can go as far as Warsaw, airport that my family used as their point of return from Europe). Being able to plan my trip pretty early, I started calling Aeroplan call centre to book part of my journey. Here is what I got (taxes were CAD 540):
Outbound: Winnipeg- Toronto- Munich- Palma de Mallorca
Inbound: London LHR- Calgary- Winnipeg
But I also wanted to see mainland Spain, Portugal and finally I have to reach India, so I had to do a lots of “fill in blanks” in terms of buying various one-way tickets. When dust finally settled, the mega trip looked like this:
YWG-YYZ-MUC (Air Canada) -PMI (Lufthansa Cityline)- 2 days in Palma
PMI- FAO (Air Berlin) - 5 days in Lagos, Portugal
FAO- SVQ (Eva Bus) – 2 days in Seville
SVQ- BCN (Vueling) – 2 days in Barcelona
BCN- ORY (Vueling) – 1 day in Paris
CDG- DEL- CCU- DEL- CDG (Air India) – 9 days in Calcutta
CDG- LON (Eurolines Bus) – 1 day in London
LHR- YYC-YWG (Air Canada) – Back home on New years day!
Also, the following tickets were purchased but not flown:
BCN- LHR (British Airways)
LHR- CDG- LHR (Air France)
Paris- London (Eurostar)
KBP- WAW (Aerosvit, who went bankrupt just in time that forced me to buy $$ tickets for my family)
At this point I would like to thank Rohit, Bangalore, Nimish & Manny who gave me valuable inputs when I asked for help in this forum about how I can meet my daughter at CDG and how she could connect at LHR for a CDG- bound flight with a short connection time. With the last minute change of her exam schedule, the whole plan got changed afterwards and that’s the main reason for the above tickets got purchased but were never flown. Well, you win some you loose some.
By end-October 2012 (first tickets were purchased on Dec 2011), all parts of the trip were planned and all tickets were filed in a binder (gone are the days when we had tickets in jackets or in pouches that Travel agents happily handed out).
The only unknown thing was the weather on December 7th morning, no snow blizzard please!
1st Flight
Date: December 7, 2012
Route: YWG- YYZ
Flight#: AC 262
Airline: Air Canada
Aircraft: A319
Departure: 0830
Arrival: 1157
I wrote many times on this forum about this route and airline, nothing different this time.
My next flight is at 7.55pm, so AC makes me spend 8 long hours at Pearson Airport doing nothing. As if each YWG passenger who connects to flights to Europe has no other better thing to do in those eight hours! Why YWG can’t have one direct flight to Europe? Apparently, we are eternally waiting for the critical mass! Grow, Winnipeg grow!
Some pictures of YYZ airport:
Evening guests are arriving one by one
2nd Flight
Date: December 7, 2012
Route: YYZ- MUC
Flight#: AC 846
Airline: Air Canada
Aircraft: 767-300ER
Departure: 1955
Arrival: 1000+1
I don’t like Air Canada’s old, rickety 763s. I know they are all refurbished and AC is squeezing out the most of whatever life left from those aircrafts. But they are old and it shows, broken tray table, cabin baggage locker doesn’t lock properly, small food portions. AC uses these planes to MUC, BCN, ATH, CPH and the likes. CDG, LHR, FRA get newer 333s & 77Ws. Why two different service levels for the same airline on similar routes are beyond my understanding.
We had a short connection time at MUC for our PMI flight. Once we landed on time in MUC, we rushed towards our connecting flight gate, leaving me no time to get a feeling about MUC where I landed for the first time. Though we were transiting MUC, we had to do immigration here.
3rd Flight
Date: December 8, 2012
Route: MUC- PMI
Flight#: LH 1832
Airline: Lufthansa Cityline
Aircraft: A320
Departure: 1110
Arrival: 1325
The load was very poor on this newer airbus, I would say about 40%. Cityline brand of LH, I can’t recall whether I have flown them before, has no PTVs, instead the seat back is used as magazine holder. Never seen this before.
The flight was one of the bumpiest I have ever taken. From the moment it took off, it encountered choppy weather and when it came on Alps mountain range which generated more bumps and the turbulence continued once it came on Mediterranean Sea and we didn’t get respite until it landed on a sunny bright day at Palma de Mallorca.
Just outside Palma airport
Good bye gloomy weather!
Palma:
Next two days I traveled around this beautiful city and tasted many local dishes.
Palma is the capital of Mallorca island that is part of autonomous Baleric Islands, has a history of Moorish occupation, Arab bath houses can still be found in the city centre and some places still has such names like almudina.
In and around Palma:
My son tells me to add this picture
Soller Train ride:
If you come to Palma, it is highly recommended that you take this train ride to the town called Soller. The carriages of the train are made of woods and this particular line was laid to transport iron ore from the mountainous part of Soller. Today it’s a major tourist attraction. I can compare this train ride to the narrow gauge train ride between OOty and Mettupalaiyam that I took many years back.
Soller Train station:
Soller seafront:
Quick lunch: fresh fish & chips
The town is getting ready for Xmas
Appreciate Santa's dedication here! Indian Post, are you listening?
Palma airport is beautiful and with the deregulation of aviation sector in EU, state-sponsored airlines no more control their airports. In PMI, I saw more LX planes and in FAO, it’s more AB than anybody else. Imagine seeing more LH or AI in DXB than EK!
Can't forget that I am in Pablo Picasso or Salvadore Dali's backyard!
Never saw a Germanwings aircraft before
I loved my time at Palma but I have to move on, I got to cover quite a few exotic places.
4th Flight
Date: December 10, 2012
Route: PMI- FAO
Flight#: AB 7264
Airline: Air Berlin
Aircraft: A320
Departure: 1435
Arrival: 1535
This one is the cheapest airline seat where I rested my butt for next two hours! CAD1 plus taxes brought the price to majestic CAD35 a piece (one 23 KG check in luggage included). When I booked these tickets around June-July 2012, I was taking a chance knowing fully well that there is no other scheduled airline that flies on that route. So, if AB goes kaput, it takes with him my dream of reaching Faro non-stop, not to mention $$ that I have to pay to buy new tickets. But again, you win some you loose some. AB is still flying and lately it’s getting petrol-soaked helping hands (read Etihad)!
AB charges $$ for checking in at AB counter, so I downloaded AB apps on my iPhone night before using hotel’s wi-fi. I could save our boarding passes in passbook folder of iPhone and the smiling lady at counter could scan that and issued boarding passes.
The flight was delayed because it was connecting passengers from TXL which got delayed due to a flash strike of airport staff at Berlin airport. So finally when we all boarded, I noticed that the majority of the passengers were from Germany.
The flight was one of the best flights I have ever taken in short distance category. Excellent service, some snacks, 3-D flight tracking on TVs and a pack of goodies for our son! CAD1 never stretched so far in an aircraft!
We landed at Faro airport two hours later than scheduled arrival and were in a hurry to reach Lagos which is 50 miles away! A short enquiry at Tourist info desk made us run to the Faro train station to catch the last train of the day!

Train that took us from Faro to Lagos

We reached our resort (home for next 5 days) in Lagos quite late at night!
Portugal
There are few places/countries that I always wanted to visit but I never could. Portugal was one such. In adolescent years I was mesmerized by one-carriage trams of Lisbon on its cobble-stoned roads. I always supported Portuguese soccer team in world cups. And my friends from Goa were always different than rest of us. They had a natural tendency of winning over our female colleagues whom we courted so hard but without success. They were fun loving, guitar strumming, happy-go-lucky Tony Braganza or Melvin De Souza or Mario Fernandez who I have seen happily traded their office career for an evening of guitar jamming session or playing soccer in Calcutta maidan. Some said that their forefathers were from Portugal and some had traveled to Portugal to connect with their relatives. I had a soft corner for Portugal.
The resort where we will be staying is part of RCI timeshare system. I had a gift certificate for 7 nights but we stayed only for five nights. Being off-season, we got one of the best apartment available, huge bedroom overlooking the Atlantic and the living room had a panoramic view of Lagos city. This will be the second Lagos where I set my foot, first one being Lagos in Nigeria at the very beginning of my expatriate life.
Can't complain about the Condo:
Lagos town from window:
Weather being nice, sea food being cheap and plenty, people being very friendly- we maxed out on everything!
Reminded me of Ileke beach, Lagos (Nigeria)! Two Lagos but thosands of Kms away!
Downtown Lagos, very pretty
I found Mahatma Gandhi
Our Resort from far:
Elaborate arrangement for Dog's wedding
Square where slave trading used to take place centuries back. Mankind has come a long way: From slave trading to same-sex marriage!
Plenty of local Wines in stores and quite cheap
Orange & Olive trees everywhere
Soccar heros decorating the lampposts! At first I thought Police looking for Pirates
Day trip to Lisbon:
When I came so close how can I not visit my dream city, Lisboa? There was Bus or Train option and I chose Train. You need to do a change of train at a station called Tunes and the whole journey from Lagos to Lisboa takes approx. 4 hours each way.
Vasco da Gama whom we all know as the person who discovered India is still a very popular figure in Portugal. Our guide mentioned a few times the spice trade between India and Portugal that started after Vasco da Gama discovered India, helped Portugal economically to uplift its status in Europe. Traders from France, England & Italy came to Portugal to buy spices.
Some pictures of Lisbon.
Our train entering Lisbon
The famous double-decker bridge
Cathedral where Vasco da Gama rested
There he is, the great navigator!
I have come so far to see you little Tramcar! Childhood dream fulfilled!
Futuristic Lisbon
LIS airport is pretty close to city centre I guess. I could hear planes taking off
I spent memorable five days in Lagos and met a lot of retired and semi-retired people from England, Finland and Scandinavian countries. Some of them live there permanently to avoid long winters and also to stretch their retirement euros. For a prospective retirement home, if anyone is interested here in this forum, ocean facing condos are easily available in Lagos starting at 125,000 euros. As any Realtor will tell you, this is the best time to buy
My next destination is Seville, Spain. There I heard I can see the tomb of another great explorer, Christopher Columbus.
We are taking bus from Lagos to Sevilha (in Portuguese). A quick cab ride brought us to the bus station. There we met a lone backpacker from North Carolina who just retired from a school teacher’s job and this is his first trip where he has no return ticket and no pre-set plan. “I will not be back (to USA) before spring”, he said nonchalantly. I envy you, lucky fella!

Crossing into Spain from Portugal
I read somewhere that a visit to Spain will not be complete if you don’t visit Seville (Granada is another one). It’s the most fashionable & happening city in Andalusia, has lots of architecture and lots of Tapas bars for food lovers. Did the guide say that flamenco dance originated here? I loved my two days in Seville.
Nice structures
Notice the green recycle bin
Uniquely shaped Bridge
You can find these Drumming groups in all big cities nowadays
After Seville, I am leaving for one of the best cities of the world, Barcelona.
5th Flight
Date: December 17, 2012
Route: SVQ- BCN
Flight#: VY 2251
Airline: Vueling Airlines
Aircraft: A320
Departure: 1010
Arrival: 1145
SVQ is a mid-sized airport that connects conveniently with other Spanish airport besides few other European destinations. Vueling is the leader here.
Airside SVQ
A short uneventful flight brought us finally over Mediterranean Sea for final approach to BCN. Don’t have a picture but the final approach is very scenic. We landed at BCN El Prat airport where daughter landed about an hour earlier from LHR. We all got united at arrival area as planned.
Weather god again didn’t disappoint us in Barcelona also; we embraced the sunny crispy day waited for us once we are out of the airport.
Barcelona’s skyline is heavily influenced by world famous Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi, figurehead of Catalan modernism. I have no training or education in arts but I would say his works are unbelievably beautiful, they left me awe-struck.
The famous Familia Sargada
Left me awe-struck!
Barcelona without a Bullfighting arena? No way!
Barcelona is very cosmopolitan, though recent economic downturn has hit the city hard but during my time I didn’t see any mass protests (that cable TV regularly oozes out). I saw big number of immigrants (most probably illegal) from northern India selling souvenir, water bottles in popular tourist spots. The moment they saw a Police car in the vicinity, they just vanished in thin air with their wares.
We walked down the famous las Ramblas (compare Time Square of New York or Red Square of Moscow), watched our purses from being picked by professionals (very common here), ate Paellas and took lots of pictures of this beautiful city.
What does it mean? Can someone translate?
Christopher Columbus: Pointing towards the Americas
Street Artists:
Another desparate Santa
Fruits galore
Spain without Soccer stars! Are you kidding me?
Antoni Gaudi's home in a park that he created
A memorable trip came to it's midpoint. Here at BCN, we will be boarding two different airlines. Wife and son are KBP bound whereas daughter & I are ORY bound.
At BCN airport:
Air Baltic, my son's preferred airline!
I was lucky to visit the tombs of two great explorers (Vasco Da Gama & Christopher Columbus ) in history. I flew two new airlines. I set my foot in six airports for the first time. And I avoided Winnipeg’s winter for three straight weeks!
Thanks for reading, bon voyage!

The Rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain, but when it rains and pours trip reports, especially from your keyboard Mr. Pal, do we com-Plain/com-Plane?
Since the pictures are out, I guess Pal Jr has returned with Mrs Pal, and if you say that he can identify a 752 from a 763, he must be as much of a plane buff as most of us here! It sure runs in the genes.
Thanks for yet another superb offering. I do not remember the whole family plot, but I guess this part had you and your son with you. I fully agree with his insistence on posting the vintage car picture towards the end
I loved the preamble with the four pictures, with the shivers of the first two giving rise to the warm of the latter duo. You had us mesmerised with the pictures and the descriptions (thanks for the detailed pictures of the food ). Your pictures and descriptions of Palma de Mallorca had me caught on the edge of my seat, before a phone call rudely woke me out of my reverie, calling me to a meeting. Here I am, back, and enjoying the pictures and descriptions, again. Thanks for covering this part in so much detail. I eagerly look forward to the next part.
Cheers, Sumantra. |

I hear you For travellers like us doing a full-time job (to pay our bills) is a torture For me, driving down to office every morning needs lots of motivation and strong doses of coffee!
I don't know whether you have been to Barcelona or not but I would say it's a must-go place! _________________ Tally Sheet:

Jason, I would happily swap place if you want
This winter is exceptionally cold for us, last night we had -40 degree C with windchill.

I don't know whether you have been to Barcelona or not but I would say it's a must-go place! | Mr. Pal, the above is true for all of us! No, I have not been to Barcelona, but would love to go there! I have heard about it from two senior colleagues (who flew 9W, by the way - a few years back to Brussels, and code-shared with SN to BCN), and your pictures really warmed me to the place. I hope work takes me there! Further, they also warned me about the pickpocket problem. There was a Bong link to it as well - when one of them (who is uniformly called `Subhasis-da' by his colleagues) went to Barcelona, people who came to his house to search him out, obviously did not find him. One of my Bong friends summarised it in one of the dialects of East Bengal, (please forgive me if I have got it wrong, since this is not something I am really familiar with), `Subhasis-da bADi-cilo-nA'. (This was a pun on `Barcelona', meaning something like `Subhasis-da was not at home').
And yes - please forgive me for referring to you as Mr. Pal - you, along with sabya99 (whom I should really not be referring to by his first name), are among the very senior members of this forum, along with Devesh-ji. Most of us are youngsters here, just in awe of aviation - you all are really experienced and well-travelled people. It is an honour for us to have you all here!
Cheers, Sumantra. |

An excellent report Pal, I felt like I was on a sightseeing tour with you.
May be next time when I do a report I should include some pictures from the country as well.
Thanks for posting.

Glad that you like my TR, sri_bom.
Quote: | May be next time when I do a report I should include some pictures from the country as well. |
I tend to believe that aviation forums like ours generally expect TRs with contents more on Check-in/Pre-boarding/In-flight experiences than a sightseeing tour of the cities visited. For example, A.Net has some seasoned TR writers who do a good job of ranking their experiences at the end of their TRs. I guess Airlines read those to see what travelling public thinks about their service levels.
I being an armchair avaition expert, concentrate more on sights & sounds of places I visit and expect others to write copy-book TRs which I enjoy thoroughly reading them again & again. Having said that, there is another group of TR writers on A.net & AI.net who emphasis more on places than flying experience. So there is a mix. Travelling and Aviation are interconnected, so are the members background in a forum like ours.
sri_bom, it's been a while that we read a TR from you Expecting one soon. _________________ Tally Sheet:
