Fantastic Trip Report.

I'm so jealous - I won't be able to experience the AI 787 until I get back to India in December Sad

I was hoping to have the authentic AI experience for my first flight on the bird, but the delays mean I'll end up on United's 787 first.

Bala, thanks for sharing yet another wonderful trip report.
You had the reader waiting to read the next word, and share your excitement of being on the 787. My usual question: the power-ports. One power-port between every pair of seats, below the cushion, like on the AI 777s? I could not see any power ports on the back of the seat, like VS's new A330s.
Thanks, Sumantra.

Great !

Enjoyed reading it

I think they should put the 788 on a route with strong competition and get pax towards them rather than try untapped routes.

If you put a 788 on say BOM-LHR, DEL-LHR. For the hardware, you will attract people. Ideally even at same fares and people, AI would make more money over others on the route if 788 stands out to what it claims in terms of economics

rather than trying MEL/SYD which has limited market size.

The Y cabin actually looks quite decent with pax in it.

J should have been better product!

Great report.

Delhi's T3 looks fantastic. If only some airline could turn it into a viable international hub.

AI's 787 J Cabin looks ugly and spartan (who came up with those colors? A CPI(M) ex-minister?), although the seats themselves make for very comfortable beds (they're the same model as TK's) and beat any J seat EK has on its aircraft.

wow!
Already I'm jealous!
Fantastic!
A few points I noted:
-Full filling meal on IT? Wow!
-When does AI staff ever have a clue? My only flight with them, I asked if the flight was full. Reply was 'quite full', when in reality it was actually, 'very empty'.
-My only departure from DELs T3 was in the day.
-Love the pictures of the sculptures, etc!
-In contrast to MF Hussain, the Samsung ad, showing that those are possible on the phone as well. Maybe.
-Correction: LCC's other than 9W-K.
-So in that case, there are only 28 washrooms in DEL T3?
-AI 788 looks really blank without those little extras.
-AI 788 names? A possible suggestion: INDIAN POLITICIANS! Very Happy
-AI 788 looks much more different than the usual planes. A complete makeover to the usual product!
-Vents and lights look great! So does the cabin and all the new features (including the exit sign)
-787 is Boeing's latest plane, and they still give an ash tray? Weird. Extremely, weird.
-We can sit in front of the engines in AI Y class on the 787? Wow!
-J class looks okay, not too bad, nothing too special.

Regards
Jishnu.

Oh, the joy of SATS. The worst part of the company.
AIATSL agents are generally better though...

It's not actually that different to a (non-avgeek) pax than the 777 except for the windows.

Having an ashtray in the lav is a safety regulation in most countries. The logic is that if somebody were to smoke, safe disposal is necessary.

Great TR Bala! Congratulations for being the first one amongst us to fly on the 787!

The plane looks awesome, but wonder how it will look after an year or so with AI.

I don't like those fancy window shades. Plenty of scope for malfunction there.
The manual ones are much more reliable.

yes, and Jayalalithaaa, Laloo Yadav and Narendra Modi as well Shocked
I think it was Vimanav (wonder where he is now) who once said that if AI planes got such names he would burn his Indian passport and declare himself persona non grata. I too will do the same if it happens! Rolling Eyes

A good idea would be to name the 787s after Indian cities. So we could have a City Of Delhi, City of Mumbai, City of Chennai, City of Hyderabad etc

Fantastic report, love the pictures and thanks for posting. Very fortunate indeed that you managed to get a ride on these new birds.

In your opinion do you think this will be a comfortable aircraft for a 12 hour journey? As ANA has started using 787 on the Tokyo - USA sector I will try flying them on my next US trip.
