Dear All,
Recently, I had the opportunity to go through Delhi's New (Old) terminal T2. This terminal has been bought back into operation after almost 7 years of being mothballed, to cater for the expansion of Delhi airport as a whole. T2 was supposed to cater for all LCCs so that T1 could be renovated and expanded. However IndiGo and SpiceJet decided not to move and so only Go air moved from T1 to T2 and as a result, T2 is now an exclusive Go Air terminal.

Terminal 2 was opened on 1 May 1986 and was used for International flights until July 2010 when operations shifted to T3. T2 was commissioned on May 1, 1986. When the terminal was opened it had 60000 sq. meters. of space, nearly 4 times that of the old airport. Since then, T2 was lying abandoned and used to handle Haj operations once a year. T2 was renovated to accommodate at least two of the three low-cost airlines operating from Delhi airport’s Terminal 1. The airport operator wants to shift two of the three airlines — Indigo, SpiceJet and GoAir — to another terminal temporarily to be able to expand and decongest T1. The all-new terminal was made operational for domestic passengers from October 29 to take the growing pressure off Terminal 1. However, as of now only GoAir airlines has decided to shift its operations to T2. T2 has been designed in a way that it can accommodate at least 12 million passengers annually

I had booked Go Air G8 -151 from Delhi to Guwahati and this TR covers only the terminal part of the journey. Tickets were booked online through www.goair.in. The website is minimalistic and gets the job done easily. Tickets were booked, seats selected and countdown began for the D day.

Early on 15 Dec, we set out in our car from our home in Noida to the airport. Considering the uncertain nature of Delhi traffic, we set out at 0900h for our flight at 1235h. I was tracking the rotation on previous days and it seems that VT-WGC (a NEO) would be operating this flight. However, all my hopes of getting a NEO was dashed when on the day of the flight, the previous legs were operated by VT-WAH, a CEO. The aircraft usually does DEL-BOM-DEL-GAU-IXB-DEL-PNQ-DEL. DEL-BOM-DEL leg was done by VT-WAH and sure enough this would take us to GAU. We reached the airport by 1045h and proceeded to check in. As in the main airport, there were 5 check in islands – A, B, C, D and E. But for some reason, only the middle one – D was manned by Go air and only 5 counters were open, despite there being space for 20. Now there was an X ray machine on the left hand corner manned by a CISF personnel and there were people who were getting their bags scanned. We too got our bags screened and this turned out to be a futile exercise and this wasn’t required. Since only 5 counters were manned, it took us about 30 mins till our turn came for check in. Check in was a smooth affair and we proceeded towards security. Since T2 is currently exclusive to Go Air and Go Air doesn’t have a lot of flights from DEL, there was virtually no line at security and we were airside within 5 mins of our check in.
There were no views of the tarmac. There were bus boarding as well as aerobridge which were being used for boarding. Gates from 21-27 were used of which only Gate 23 is a bus boarding gate. Rest all were aerobridge. G8 151 would depart from Gate 24.

Gates 24-27 were located towards the right side of the terminal.

There was still some work in progress. A few more shops were also slated to open.

Boarding from gate 24. Gate 24 and 25 had a common boarding point.

The premium plaza lounge. It was situated between gate 24/25 and 26/27. It was just a small holding area with few food options. It was a see through lounge as i could see inside and there was just a small partition separating the lounge from outside.

Rest of the flight i cant remember, as honestly, i slept off as soon as the aircraft took off.

So i hope you enjoyed this mini TR. Until next time.

Shivendra

Good old Terminal 2. I worked here for one month back in 1994 and have fond memories associated with it.

I had an opportunity to use it for my Jan 3, 2018 to flight to Mumbai but then decided to fly UK instead of G8.

My family started from Delhi T2 which we used to call IGI international.Since then I have travelled 4 times mostly in ninties.Once in 2013 my AI flight from JFK taxing to new T3. I had a full view of dilapidated T2. Even I saw a stray dog near by. There was no reason to keep it unused for so long. Who knows whats in the mind of Babus!

As per the original plan, T2 should have been demolished and by 2015, T4 should have replaced it.

What a lovely TR, featuring something uncommon...DEL T2! A terminal which had many of my dreams, that of flying international. I used to adore this terminal, and also look forward to Air India International connectors, just to get that `international' feel. Enough to interest both an avgeek (rotations, history), and enough for those not-so-inclined, written in your own beautiful descriptive style. It is nice to see this terminal being restored to an operation status. I remember the way it had been extensively renovated, some time before it was closed down, and T3 opened. Your report brought many of these memories back. Sir, we look forward to much more from you!
Cheers, Sumantra.

Sivendra, thanks for sharing this with us.
It comes very handy for me because my upcoming trip to India I will arrive at T3 (AMS- DEL: 9W) and then catch a flight from T2 (Go air to CCU). I have about 5 hours to make the connection. I was told that from T3 to T2 is really a short walk. Is it true? With 2 pieces of luggage I hope it's not a hassle.

thank you, Samir-da Smile The actual distance is not that much, but I haven't tried the walk with two pieces of luggage, and gate to gate may actually be longer. Shukla-ji may comment on this.
Cheers, Sumantra.

Thank you Sumantra. I believe it's short distance, just read on Trip advisor where someone did the walk without hassle.
